In today’s blog post, we will discuss how to import a git repository hosted in GitHub or GitLab or any git-based version control system into an Azure DevOps project.

You can directly import a public git-based repository to your Azure DevOps projects without any additional configuration. However, if you are trying to import a private git-based repository to your Azure DevOps project, then you need your personal access token (PATs) of the source git-based repository. You can use below links to create a personal access token for most popular git-based version control systems –

How to import a git repository in Azure DevOps project?

Prerequisites:

Step 1: Login to your source git-based version control system and grab the HTTPS clone URL. If your source git repository is private, you will also need the personal access token.

Step 2: Login to your Azure DevOps portal using below link

https://dev.azure.com/your_organization_name

Step 3: Navigate to the Azure Repos located inside your Azure DevOps project and click “Import repository”.

Step 4: Provide your source git repository HTTPS clone URL and a new name for the imported repository and click “Import”. If you are trying to import a private repository then check “Requires Authentication” and provide username and password/PAT.
